Title BANBURY AND CHELTENHAM DIRECT RAILWAY COMPANY
Date 1873-1891
Level Collection
Reference B139
Description The Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway Act of 1873 incorporated the company and authorised the construction of a railway between Banbury and Cheltenham. By 1 June 1879 the company had opened a line from Bourton-on-the-Water to Cheltenham. Disputes between the company and their contractors and competitors together with the necessity for line deviations and financial difficulties meant that a railway was not built between Chipping Norton and Kings Sutton until 1887. In 1897 the company was bought by the Great Western Railway.
The documents were given to this office in January 2002 by British Railway Board (residuary) Ltd as accession 4658

Catalogued by Mark Priddey, November 2011
